Amino Acid Availability in Feedstuffs for the Growing Pig
نویسندگان
چکیده
Assessing amino acid (AA) availability in dietary ingredients is integral to the optimal formulation of diets both in terms of maximising nutrient utilization and profitability. Although the concept that nutrients in feedstuffs are not fully absorbed and metabolized by the animal is now widely accepted, a distinction needs to be made between the concepts of digestibility and availability. Digestibility is often referred to as the uptake of an AA from the gut, whereas availability is usually defmed as the degree of uptake and subsequent utilization of the AA for protein synthesis and other anabolic processes. Amino acid availability is a complex phenomenon affected by many interacting factors. For most AAs availability will digestibility, but there is likely to be some discrepancy between digestibility and availability, particularly for the amino acid lysine in heat-treated foods (Moughan 1989). Although the following discussion will place emphasis on aspects of AA digestibility, the availability of absorbed AA’s will also be considered with reference to heat-treated feed ingredients. The application of AA digestibility data, particularly in relation to diet formulation is stressed.

Amino acid digestibility and poultry feed formulation: expression, limitations and application
The nutritional value or quality of dietary proteins used for poultry feed formulation varies: amino acid availability is an important measure of protein quality. Determination of ileal digestibility values has become the preferred method for estimating amino acid availability. This review discusses the different approaches to the expression of digestibility results, including correction for en...
متن کاملNext Generation Diet Formulation: True Metabolic Availability of Amino Acids in Diets for Pigs
Not all of the dietary amino acid that is included in standardized ileal digestibility is metabolically available for protein synthesis. A rapid method was developed to determine metabolic amino acid availability in feedstuffs for protein synthesis. Using the indicator amino acid oxidation technique, a change in phenylalanine oxidation, which is inversely proportional to protein synthesis, was ...
متن کامل1293 NONRUMINANT NUTRITION SYMPOSIUM : Controlling feed cost by including alternative ingredients into pig diets : A review 1 , 2
Sustained price increases for traditional cereal grain and protein meal feed commodities have forced the pork industry to consider the dietary inclusion of alternative feedstuffs. Crop seed may serve as feedstuffs but their demand as feedstock for human food, biofuel, and bioindustrial products has increased. Together with these products, coproducts such as distillers dried grains with solubles...
متن کاملA comparison of methods to determine amino acid availability of feedstuffs in cecectomized ganders.
Experiments were conducted to compare endogenous amino acid losses and the true amino acid availability (TAAA) of 3 feedstuffs by using methods involving a short-term fasting and an N-free diet with cecectomized ganders. Diets were formulated to contain soybean meal, fish meal, and cottonseed meal as the sole source of protein. A precision-fed assay was used in which each feed sample was precis...

A case is made for the application of true ileal amino acid digestibility and true ileal reactive lysine digestibility (lysine availability) in poultry nutrition. Technical aspects of the true ileal digestibility assays are reviewed, as are factors influencing amino acid digestibility in the broiler. There is considerable variation in amino acid digestibility and lysine availability both within...
